![]() Although the other ingredients complemented each other well, the bread and the pesto are what made the sandwich. ![]() The sandwich also came with provolone cheese, tomato, romaine, Parmesan, pesto and Caesar dressing. The olive oil that I had smelled was coming from the bread, which was warm and crisp, yet moist. And the next, and the next, and so forth-you get the idea. The distinct smell of olive oil and pesto instantly hit me. The moment I picked up my tray, I caught a whiff of my food and instantly my taste buds were dancing. Not surprisingly, the comparisons stop there. No more than five minutes later, my name was called over a microphone which reminded me of a fast food restaurant like McDonald’s or Burger King. After getting a fountain drink, I made my way to one of the wooden booths along the wall to wait. I then walked along the long counter to pay at the register. At the suggestion of the person helping me, I ordered the Grilled Marinated Chicken Breast sandwich which came with my choice of potato salad, pasta salad, fresh fruit or raw veggies I chose the pasta salad. There was also a variety of soups and salads. Each one made my mouth water more than the next through its description. Grilled Pastrami, Tuna Melt with Swiss, Italian Grinder, Chicken Apple Sausage, Vegetarian and many more. The person taking my order was friendly and patient as I glanced at the many choices, especially the sandwiches. The menu was displayed on two large green hanging chalkboards behind the tall long counter which reminded me of an old fashioned soda shoppe. The atmosphere was relaxed, which immediately made me feel welcomed. Tall wooden booths were lined up against the walls with tables scattered in between. Red bricks lined the walls with a wide open industrial ceiling. Right away my ears were greeted by the loud chatter of the 1 o’clock lunch guests as I surveyed everything around me. Then we saw a sign in the window that explained it all, it was a notice of transfer of ownership. From the outside, Simple Simon’s Bakery and Bistro in downtown Riverside looks like a high-end sit down restaurant with floor to ceiling windows and a fancy logo, which is why I was shocked once I actually stepped in. My wife suggested that maybe we not be so anxious to return and I agreed. It turned out to be less than a thirty minute wait. While I was eating, I noticed the other kid had his thumb in someone's salad that he was delivering. I almost said," take your thumb off my sandwich", but I decided to ignore it. I spotted our order coming, but I could see his thumb resting on my sandwich as he was carrying it. There were two teenage boys, delivering sandwiches to tables. I told her my issue and she re checked the total and confirmed that I was overcharged seventeen dollars, she gave me a cash refund for the difference. I went to the cashier, she was no where to be found and there was a line forming of people waiting to pay( looking back, I guess that is not an issue when there is a 30 minute wait for food )apparently, she went to the storeroom to get cups. The receipt wasn't itemized, but there were twelve prices listed and we only ordered eight. We sat down and waited for food and I looked at the receipt because it seemed like a high price. The cashier didn't know what that was, she only knew it was a ginger beer, no problem, "You learn something every day", she said. We ordered a beef club sandwich, a chicken sausage sandwich, two cookies, a pecan bar, a lemon bar and two beverages, one drink ordered was a Bundarberge. I was told that there was a lot of online orders. I looked around and there was hardly a line so I asked why. ![]() Upon arrival at 1:00 on Monday, we were informed that it would take 30-45 minutes before lunch would be ready. ![]()
